イギリスと詩/詩人

　イギリスでは様々なところで詩が結構読まれます。例えば私たちのイギリスでの結婚式でも、夫婦としての詩を一つ選んで朗読せねばならないという、その地域の決まりがなぜかあり、すごく素敵だったインディアンの詩を苦労して選んた覚えがあります。

　最もよく知られた詩人たちの数人が、ウェストミンスター寺院の詩人コーナーに埋葬されたり、もしくは祝辞によって記念されていたりします。

有名な詩のラインとその翻訳

　いくつか有名な詩を紹介してみましょう。

　「故郷に思い馳せる」(‘Home Thoughts from Abroad’)

「虎」(‘The Tyger’)

虎よ！虎よ！夜の森の中で
燃え輝く虎よ
如何なる不死の手と目が
汝の恐ろしいシンメトリー*を作ったのか

　 *シンメトリーは左右対称という意味ですが、ここで言われる”Fearful Symmetry”は、虎の顔の模様の事ではないかとふと気づきました。

　左右対称ですね、そう言えば。

　今まで、「象の鼻は長いよ」と教えられた事はあるけど、「虎の顔の模様は左右対称なんだよ」と教えられたことはないので、さすが詩人だと思いました。見えているものが違いますね。きっと、ウィリアム・ブレイクは、虎と真正面から対峙した事があるんでしょう。

　ウィルフレッド・オーウェンは、第一次世界大戦での経験を書き起こした詩人でしたね。悲しくなります。人間は、そんな事のために生まれてくるのではありません。
