覚えなくてもいいもの

　”Life in the UK”には、問題形式についての注意書きがあります。これを読まなければ、必要ないものを覚えていた！という事にもなりかねません。本題に入る前に少しまとめてみましょう。

　簡単に要約すると、以下のようになります。

　歴史的重要人物がいつからいつまで生きていたのかなどの年号を覚える必要はない。でも、それ以外はなるべく全部把握しておいてね。

　と言う事になっております。これが選択問題でなければ、普通に英語でやる社会の学年末試験です。

The values and principles of the UK.

　本題に入りましょう。私は”Life in the UK”の2020/2018年版(2バージョンともほぼ同じ)を使っています。その本でいえば、2ページ目の、Chapter2の”The values and principles of the UK“を開いてください。新しいバージョンでもチャプターのタイトルは変わりませんので、その場所を参照してください。

　今日はページ2と3の途中までまとめます。

Values and Principles of the UKの意味

　　案外この抽象的な言葉の意味が一番わかりにくいかもしれません。

　我々は誰でも、個人の「❶価値基準/信条」を持って生きています。そして、それに従う形で行動するための「❷行動の原則」が出来上がっていきます。

　前者がここで言う❶valuesであり、後者が❷principlesと言えます。

　例えば、❶生きるために「正直である事」に価値基準(Values)をおいたのであれば、その正直な人間として❷生きるための原則(Principles)は「嘘をつかない事」になります。

　これが国単位になると、どうなるでしょうか？

　❶国の歴史や伝統、国民の習慣などで長い年月をかけて形成された価値基準(Values)によって、❷その国の行動の原則(Principles)としての政治方針やその中での法律が形作られて行きますよね。

そうやって形作られてきたものが、「イギリスの価値原則(values and principles of the UK)」です。

イギリスの価値原則（Values and Principles of the UK ）の内容

さて、イギリスの重要な価値原則は、大まかに５つあります。
英語で覚えましょう。

1.民主主義 (democracy)

2.法の支配/法治(the rule of law)

3.個人の自由 (individual liberty)

4.異なる信条や信仰への寛容性
(tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs)

5.社会生活への参加 (participation in community life)

イギリスの価値原則に基づく責任と自由

この上記の重要な５つの価値原則は、これからイギリスで、市民もしくは定住者として暮らそうとしている私たち全員に、そこで守るべき責任と、そこで獲得できる自由を教えてくれます。

<私たちが守るべき責任>

1.法に従い、それを遵守する事
2.意見を持つ権利を含めた、「人の権利」を尊重する事
3.公平に人と接する事
4.自分と自分の家族の世話をする事
5.住んでいる場所や環境を省みて世話をすること

<責任を遵守する事によって、イギリスから獲得できる自由>

1.信条や宗教の自由
2.発言の自由
3.不公平な差別からの自由
4.公正な裁判を受ける権利
5.政府の選挙に参加できる権利

　この内容はよく試験に出るので、内容を把握したら、もう一度、ボキャブラリと共に教科書を読んで、唱えながら英語で覚えてください。
