ぴゃっと前回のお話

　前回は啓蒙思想(Enlightenment)の話でした。

　17世紀に出てきたニュートンやデカルトなどの思想に刺激を受けた更なる天才たちが、18世紀になっていろいろな発明や思想を展開して行きますね。

　アダム・スミスやデイビット・ヒュームが有名でした。

　科学の世界では、ジェームズ・ワットの蒸気機関が産業革命に重要な種を蒔いたのでしたよね。

　そこで今回は、その産業革命についてです。

産業革命- Industrial Revolution

　 18世紀以前は、イギリスでは農業が最大の雇用源でした。

　また、たくさんの家内工業(cottage Industries)でも人々は生活を立てていました。現在ではこの職業は聞き慣れませんよね。

　これは、人々が家で衣服などの元になる布やレースなどの商品を生産する職業形態ですね。ものすごく昔(昭和初期？)あたりの内職みたいなものでしょうか。

　産業革命というのは、18世紀から19世紀に渡る急速なイギリスの産業発達を指します。

産業革命はなぜ起こったか？

　イギリスは、大規模に産業化された最初の国でした。

　機械の発達と、蒸気機関の使用がイギリスに急速な産業の発展をもたらしました。

　農業や商品の製造は、機械によってなされる事になりました。これは効率性を高め、非常に生産性を上げました。

機械の燃料

　世界は機械化されて行きます。今まで人がやっていた仕事を、機械がやるようになります。人間は食料を食べますが、機械は動かすために燃料が必要になってきますよね。

　そこで燃料としての石炭(coal)や原料が必要になってきます。それで出来上がった新しい工場を稼働させなくてはなりません。

　　この頃、人々は田舎を離れ、炭鉱や製造業で働き始めます。

ベッセマー法(Bessemer Process)

　ベッセマー法(Bessemer Process)が出てきます。

　これは大事です。

　これは、ヘンリー・ベッセマーという人が発明した鋼を大量生産できる炉のような装置です。

　ヘンリー・ベッセマーが特許を取得して彼の名前がついていますね。

　この鋼の大量生産が大事なのは、これが造船業(shipbuilding)や鉄道路線(railways)を発展させたという事です。

　ここから、製造業というのが、イギリス の主な雇用源となって行きます。

cottage industry | n. a business or manufacturing activity carried on in a person’s home:

lace | n. a fine open fabric, typically one of cotton or silk, made by looping, twisting, or knitting thread in patterns and used especially for trimming garments

rapid | adj. happening in a short time or at a fast pace:

industrialise | v. develop industries in (a country or region) on a wide scale:

machinery | n. machines in general or as a functioning unit

mechanise |v. introduce machines or automatic devices into (a process or place):

coal | a piece of glowing carbon or charred wood

raw materials | n. crude or processed material that can be converted by manufacture, processing, or combination into a new and useful product

mining |  the process or business of working mines (mine v. to dig into for ore or metal)

Bessemer process |  n. a process of making steel from pig iron by burning out carbon and other impurities by means of a blast of air forced through the molten metal

mass production | n. production of goods in considerable quantities usually by machinery

steel | n. commercial iron that contains carbon in any amount up to about 1.7 percent as an essential alloying constituent, is malleable when under suitable conditions, and is distinguished from cast iron by its malleability and lower carbon content

shipbuilding | n. the design and construction of ships:
